I painted the texture in grayscale first before using a gradient maps workflow to add color and create both final diffuse texture variations.

Final concept, plus some of the color comps I created to decide on color scheme. I ended up using 1 and 3 for the final textures.

I created this axe to be used in a video tutorial on my store here on Artstation as well as on Cubebrush. I created the concept as well as the final game ready assets. This is intended to be a hand-painted low poly asset with diffuse texture only that is ready for use in-game.

In the tutorial I walk through the entire process from start to finish for the 3D asset and how I utilized a grayscale to gradient map texture method so I could very quickly create multiple color texture variations. I've used this workflow a lot because it's so efficient when iterating or creating texture variations for the same model during a fast paced production environment.
